Piercarlo Culasso is a small grower in Barbaresco who only started his own label in 2017, though the family had owned vines in the Faset cru for generations and sold the fruit to others until then. He works it with his three children. Faset is one of Barbaresco's named crus, a south-west-facing slope by the village on greyish calcareous marls that lend the wines silky tannins and lift. This is straight Nebbiolo, fermented in steel and aged about a year in large French oak casks, so the site does the talking. Classic in profile: red cherry, rose and dried herb, fine firm tannins, bright acidity. 2021 was a fine, frost-thinned vintage in Barbaresco: a smaller, concentrated crop with a cool, classic structure built to age. 14.5%.
