Bright, beautiful nose - so fragrant it's a flower meadow in high summer. The seven-grape Collio field blend, picked across staggered passes, neat in structure, with great acidity, round and generous, long and lovely. Not super powerful but nicely concentrated, and legible in the best sense - this should be a brilliant food wine. A little ascorbic note, and quite elegant for an orange; the recent vintages feel a touch riper and fresher at once, which suits it. Clean and precise rather than funky.
Ponka is the skin-contact white blend from Paraschos, the Greek-rooted family that has farmed near San Floriano del Collio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia since 1998. The name refers to ponca (ponka), the marlstone soil typical of the Collio hills, here the Slatnik vineyard. It draws on the traditional Collio field blend: Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Friulano (Tocai), and Ribolla Gialla make up the core, alongside small amounts of other traditional Collio varieties. The wine is fermented spontaneously in oak on the skins, then aged for roughly two years on its lees in large Slavonian oak casks and bottled unfiltered ('non filtrato'). This 2021 carries the Riserva designation under the Collio Goriziano DOC.
