Verduno Pelaverga

Verduno Pelaverga is Burlotto's expression of Pelaverga Piccolo, a native red grape grown almost exclusively in and immediately around the commune of Verduno in Piedmont's Langhe, with only scattered plantings in neighbouring La Morra and Roddi. The variety had nearly disappeared by the late 20th century and was carried on by a handful of Verduno families, the Burlottos among them, before the Verduno Pelaverga DOC was established in 1995. Total production of the wine across all growers remains small, which is one reason it is rarely seen outside the region. Burlotto, long regarded as a reference for the grape, ferments it without the long macerations and old-oak aging used for its Barolo; this 2022 is bottled at the estate in Verduno (the label notes bottling by Marina Burlotto) at 14 percent alcohol.
