Tasty - a flicker of river-stone wetness opening into chamomile that with air shifts toward lemon, lime, fennel, and a nutty close. Great acidity, properly mineral, with a finish that holds. Tasted blind I read it as Jura - the chamomile-fennel-nuts arc lined up with Savagnin in my head before the answer (Pinot Blanc and Gris from Huber in Baden) actually emerged. Delicious.
Breisgau is Huber's entry-level white VDP.Gutswein, a regional Baden bottling drawn from parcels around Malterdingen - Grauburgunder from Bombach, Koendringen, and Hecklingen alongside Weissburgunder from Malterdinger Bienenberg. It is a roughly even Weissburgunder / Grauburgunder blend, whole-bunch pressed and spontaneously fermented in barrel with around a third new oak, then rested on the fine lees so the texture firms up without ever feeling oaky. 2022 was a warm, dry Baden vintage where late-season rain and cool nights helped keep the Burgunders fresh, though this is not a low-alcohol bottling at around 13%. It is the cheapest way into Julian Huber's reductive, mineral-led house style.
