Very bloody nose - red berries piled on dark berries, threaded with spice and raw tobacco. Fresh and focused, a touch of VA along the line. The body is thinner than ideal and the concentration is short, but the structure is real and the bitter twist on the finish gives it teeth. Young, delicious, more complex than the volume suggests.
Vagabond is Mythopia's Pinot Noir from the schist side of the river that runs through the estate. Pinot Noir 100%. Hand-picked whole bunches go into a six-month maceration in airtight steel before ageing in 222-litre used oak; this 2019 release was bottled in August 2020, an unusually short rest by Mythopia's house standards, where later vintages spend years longer in oak before bottling. 12% ABV. No SO2, no fining, no filtration. The name reads as a likely nod to Agnès Varda's 1985 film, though Schmidt hasn't explicitly attributed it.
