Tasted blind and missed completely - wow, this is a terrific wine. Need to revisit in a calmer setting to watch it develop. Highly perfumed: wild strawberry, crushed raspberry, pomegranate, floral hints, balanced by iron and bramble. Medium-bodied with surprisingly vibrant fresh acidity and fine, polished tannins; red berry and red cherry fruit transitioning into underbrush, minerals, rustic earthiness. Long, bright, refreshing, lingering on tart cranberry / cornelian cherry. Complex and demanding.
The TerraLuna Rosso 2016 from Podere Pian di Meta Vecchia - 100% Sangiovese in purezza, unfiltered, bottled IGT Toscana. The estate sits in Castiglione d'Orcia in the Val d'Orcia of southern Tuscany - not Montalcino, though the two communes share a stretch of border. 15% ABV - consistent with a warm, no-irrigation Sangiovese site in this hot southern Tuscan pocket. 2016 is widely considered one of the great recent vintages for Sangiovese in Tuscany - the kind of year where structure, aromatic depth, and balance lined up cleanly. Aged in stainless and larger wood. Tiny production - the estate as a whole runs around 3,500 bottles a year across all cuvées.
