Initially greeted with a potent Brettanomyces presence, the wine's initial 'horse's arse' characteristic prominently fades upon extra aeration, revealing a refined layering of spices, raspberry, strawberry, and earthy notes, complemented by dried flowers. The balance is commendable, with a medium body that carries the wine gracefully, presenting freshness, elegance, and a lingering finish. The tannins are well-structured, contributing to the overall enjoyment. Although still youthful, the wine is already pleasurable to drink, boasting complexity and an intriguing profile.
Frank has decided to make two different wines from the vast Feudo di Mezzo contrada by separating the bottom (sottana) and the upper part (soprana or Porcaria). The Munjebel FM is crafted using the bottom part, which produces a refined wine similar to those from Burgundy.
This wine is made entirely from Nerello Mascalese grapes sourced from vines that are on average 40+ years old and situated at an altitude of 580 meters above sea level. The grapes are destemmed, then lightly crushed and fermented using only indigenous yeasts, with skin contact for around 50 days. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 18 months in neutral epoxy tanks ranging from 1500 to 2500 litres in size.
