Finally conquered my fear and opened the new vintage of [Se Kwa Sa?]. It's predictably different from previous releases, thankfully far removed from the 2018 fiasco that left such a sour memory.
Sure, there's a hint of that infamous bathroom/barnyard vibe, but maybe I've acclimatised, or perhaps it's playing into the wine's complexity instead of chaos. Loads of red berries here, with a pleasing tart and bitter edge. A touch reminiscent of a homemade berry compote, mingling with earthy mushrooms and a hint of red flowers. It's beautiful and youthful, not overly complex, but so easy-going and appealing. There's a juicy vibrancy, with just a mild nip from the tannins---like a playful kitten. A small lift from the VA adds to a lingering finish. A charming wine, really pleased I returned to it with fresh eyes.
The importer (Wine Bureau) tells me that 2023 is crafted entirely from Mondeuse, though I'd welcome a bit more proof to be completely convinced! Meanwhile, the eclectic list of grapes I've got for past vintages feels a touch dubious, almost too chaotic to be accurate. So who knows?
