Wow. Herbs, a whisper of marijuana, grilled lime, sardines, with a spicy-smoky hint and a core of dry flowers and herbs. Genuinely beautiful. A bit Burgundian in spirit, but with less volume today; light-bodied and super young. Delicate and beautiful as is, should age gracefully.
Redoma Branco is the white sibling of Niepoort's 1991 Redoma Tinto - the family's first dry table wine - and joined the range in 1995 ("redoma" is Portuguese for bell jar or glass dome). Old-vine indigenous-grape field blend: Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho, Gouveio. Vines up to around eighty years old on mica-schist soils on the right bank of the Douro at 400-600 metres altitude. The white harvest at Quinta de Nápoles started 17 August 2024. Spontaneous fermentation in French oak (228L and 500L), around eight months on lees. 12% ABV. 2024 in the Douro was a return-to-classic year - warm days, cool nights, gradual ripening - with whites flagged for excellent acidity, though more variable in overall quality than the reds. Redoma sits as the entry-classic tier in Niepoort's white range, with Reserva Branco above (older vines) and Tiara as the leaner, higher-altitude alternative.
