Arroyo de las Ánimas is half a hectare of Garnacha, planted more than sixty years ago at 960 m, between the parajes of La Alberca and Lancharrasa: a mountain site in Cenicientos, toward Cadalso. The slope faces west, but it is a forest slope ringed by chestnut trees and stays in shade, and the vines root in a very shallow layer of weathered grey granite with boulders breaking through.
It is the most recent red parcel in 4 Monos' La Danza del Viento collection. The first vintage, 2020, was sold almost entirely to the restaurant Mugaritz; 2021 made around 650 bottles. The grapes go in mostly as whole clusters for a cold maceration of about 25 days, and the wine then spends 13 to 15 months in a 500 or 600 litre French oak barrel, depending on the source.
2022 was picked early. The Wine Advocate counts about 850 bottles (one retailer says 760), and part of the wine also went into the village red, Cien Lanzas.
