About
Purcari launched its icewine in 2012, from Muscat Ottonel and Traminer. Purcari describes hand-picked, hand-sorted grapes, frozen at -6 to -10 °C; for the 2014 it gave six to twelve months in French oak barriques. The 2015 came out at 12.5% with 125 g/l of sugar.
How the grapes freeze is less clear. Purcari speaks of grapes frozen by a special technology and, in later years, of a harvest at -6 to -8 °C; its German importer gives a November-December harvest. None of it says whether the frost comes on the vine or after picking, and Moldovan law, at least as of 2019, allowed the name Ice Wine for both.
The 2015 front label reads Premium Icewine. The wine is still made, listed as Icewine in Purcari's Limited Edition range, where it already sat in 2016.
