What makes it special is the balance between finesse and maturity - neither dominates. Yellow apples, mushrooms, honey, sherry-like oxidative notes. The structure is extraordinary - fine, almost astringent, with those savoury sherry notes weaving through. Incredible.
Côte Vertus Premier Cru 2010 is a long-aged Blanc de Blancs from the Bérêche family's Côte project, now released under the Monts Fournois umbrella. 100% Chardonnay from Vertus on the Côte des Blancs, vinified and aged in oak, then left on lees in bottle for around 148 months before disgorgement in October 2023, finished as Extra Brut at 3.4 g/L. Vertus is the southernmost Premier Cru of the Côte des Blancs - cooler, more saline, and more nervy than the Grand Crus to the north. That much time on the cork transforms the wine: primary fruit recedes and what comes forward is the lees register, the chalk, and a steady oxidative minerality.
