Plous'saperlipopette

Plous'saperlipopette is Julien Mareschal's Pupillin Ploussard, its name reading as a mash-up of the grape's local spelling and the old French exclamation saperlipopette. It is the stainless-steel counterpart to the domaine's old-vine Ploussard Côte de Feule, which US importer Weygandt-Metzler describes as coming from vines averaging 45 years and aging in older 1300-litre barrels; a distributor tech sheet for the 2023 places this cuvee instead on Trias and Lias marls, its vines planted in 1990 on a 25% south-east slope at about 300 metres, 5,500 to the hectare.

The fruit was hand-picked on 3 September 2023 and handled 80% hand-destemmed, 20% whole clusters, fermented on native yeasts through a 14-day maceration with no punch-downs and only a few light pump-overs, then aged 10 months in stainless steel and bottled unfined, unfiltered and without added sulfur - total SO2 measured 10 mg/L, per the same sheet - at a light 11% alcohol. The vines are plowed and farmed without herbicides or synthetic products.

Per Vinous's Jura report, 2023 brought the high yields growers badly needed after the frost losses of 2021, with no repeat of the spring freeze; the region's 2023 reds read leaner and less concentrated than the 2022s but abundantly fresh, and Poulsard often performed better in 2023, more transparent of its terroir than the year before.
