Blauburgunder Pinot Nero

The classic-line Pinot Noir of Kellerei Kaltern, bilingual on the label as Blauburgunder and Pinot Nero. Per the producer's 2024 tech sheet the fruit comes from east-facing hillside sites at 450-550 m on loamy calcareous gravel with a little sand, from vines 5 to 25 years old trained on wire frame and pergola, cropped at 70 hl/ha.

The wine sees no oak at this tier: an eight-day fermentation on the skins at 23 C, full malolactic conversion, then five months split between concrete vats and stainless steel. The sheet lists 2.5 g/l of residual sugar against 4.9 g/l of acidity, and the house positions it as a fruit-first, early-drinking Pinot.

2024 was a cool, rain-marked season in Alto Adige - the consortium reports April frost and yield losses across the region, with lighter, more elegant wines as the result - and its vintage report singles out Pinot Noir as one of the winners, describing fresh raspberry and sour cherry fruit, bright clear color and delicate tannin. The producer's own vintage note adds that a warm, sunny August rescued the season and the early-ripening reds were picked before the autumn rains in near-perfect condition.
