Kellerei Kaltern

Kellerei Kaltern is the cooperative of Kaltern (Caldaro), the wine village on the lake of the same name south of Bolzano in Alto Adige. Its roots go back to 1900, and the present house is the end point of a century of consolidation among five village cooperatives: Erste and Neue merged into Erste+Neue in 1986, the Josef Baron Di Pauli cooperative was folded into them in 1991, Bauernkellerei and Jubiläumskellerei became Kellerei Kaltern in 1992, and in 2016 Erste+Neue and Kellerei Kaltern completed the final merger under the Kellerei Kaltern name.

The scale is classic Alto Adige cooperative: about 530 member growers farming 420 hectares between 200 and 850 m around Lake Kaltern, an average holding of just 0.7 hectares, and everything picked by hand. Since 2018 the house has been certified under the FAIR'N GREEN sustainability scheme, and states it was the first Italian wine producer and the first cooperative to receive that certification. The cellar is led by Kellermeister Thomas Scarizuola, with a range that runs from the classic village line through the Selection wines to the Quintessenz tier.
