Lime and green apple, then a perfumed sweetness that's actually quite nice - sea spray, chalk, some sweet spices floating around. Should be all sharp and angular, but the oak rounds it out without killing the freshness. Tasty, stylish, and it works.
Lime and green apple, then this perfumed sweetness that's actually quite nice. Touch of sea spray, chalk. Some sweet spices floating around. Should be all sharp and angular, but the oak rounds it out without killing the freshness. It's tasty, it's stylish, and it works. Not going to change your life, but sometimes you just want something pretty that drinks well. This delivers exactly that.
Sattlerhof's village-level Morillon - the Ortswein tier in the Austrian DAC pyramid (Gebietswein -> Ortswein -> Riedenwein), labelled by the village of Gamlitz. It sits below the two single-vineyard Morillons in the Sattlerhof range: Ried Kapellenweingarten (Grosse STK) and Ried Pfarrweingarten (Grosse STK), both Riedenwein.
Sourced from steeply sloping parcels around Gamlitz at 350-450 metres, cool microclimate. The producer's factsheet describes the soils as quartz and limestone; in practice, the Ortswein draws on the mica/quartz-sand parcels that aren't of single-cru quality - the limestone is reserved for the Pfarrweingarten cru, the gravel for Kapellenweingarten.
Vinification per the producer's 2023 factsheet: hand-picked into small boxes with selective harvest, fermented in large oak barrels (große Holzfässer), then classic maturation on the fine lees for 8 months.
Specs: 12.5% ABV, 1.1 g/L residual sugar, 5.4 g/L total acidity. Certified biodynamic.
2023 was a difficult Südsteiermark vintage - heavy rainfall, peronospora (downy mildew) and coulure pressure, hail in places, the lowest yields since 2016. The whites that came through tend to show moderate alcohol, dense extract, and well-preserved acidity - precise rather than ripe.
