Janko and Tamara Štekar's farm in Snežatno, Goriška Brda - five hectares of steep Flysch slopes directly across the border from Collio, macerated Rebula, and some of Slovenia's most uncompromising orange wine.
Kmetija Štekar is a family farm in Snežatno, a hamlet in the Kojsko area of Goriška Brda - the Slovenian side of the border from Italy's Collio, sharing the same Flysch terroir of layered marl and sandstone. Family ownership since 1672. Run today by Janko Štekar and his wife Tamara, with their son Jure on the winemaking side since 2012.
Five hectares of steep-slope vineyards at around 180 metres, south and south-west facing. Fully natural: no synthetic chemicals, organic treatments only when needed, indigenous yeast, spontaneous fermentation. Two lines: fresh wines (no skin maceration) and reserve wines (macerated). Maceration length varies by variety: four to five days for Malvazija, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio; up to fifteen days for Rebula (the Slovenian name for Ribolla Gialla) - their signature and the grape that connects them to the Oslavia tradition of Gravner, Radikon, and Paraschos just across the Italian border.
Considered among the most uncompromising orange-wine producers in Brda alongside Klinec and Nando. They also run an agritourism (the first in Brda, since 1986) and make their own prosciutto - a working farm in the fullest sense.
