Smoke first, and then the prettier things underneath - white flowers, anise, citrus, fresh lemon, even a faint flick of petrol threading through. The palate carries the class: medium-bodied with fine volume, flavours that manage to caress and punch at the same time, everything held in elegant focus. Complex, no question - just a bit too young, and not in a friendly mood today. The kind of bottle that asks for patience rather than affection.
Chambrees is Caroline Morey's village Chassagne-Montrachet blanc. The name is not a lieu-dit but her label for a blend of three village parcels in the heart of Chassagne - Le Chene, Les Masures and La Bergerie - old vines planted in the 1960s and early 1990s (earlier vintages carried a Vieilles Vignes mention). The parcels are vinified separately and assembled before bottling.
Whole-bunch pressed, fermented on indigenous yeasts and raised in 350-litre barrels (around 20-25% new) with no batonnage, then bottled unfined and unfiltered - the 2021 in June 2023, per the importer sticker, with 1 g/l of residual sugar. 100% Chardonnay from a frost-shortened Burgundy vintage that rewarded patience over volume.
