This Riesling belongs to Tesco's own Finest range in Slovakia, and its neck names the winery it was made with: Víno Matyšák of Pezinok. Tesco built the Slovak side of its own labels together with the Slovak growers' and winemakers' union: the chain asked local wineries to offer wines, and union sommeliers helped choose them. In July 2022 the news agency SITA counted Rizling rýnsky among the Slovak wines on Tesco's own labels, and Matyšák among the wineries making them for Finest.
Rizling rýnsky is the Slovak name for Riesling, the "Rhine" Riesling, kept apart from Rizling vlašský, which is Welschriesling. The fruit comes from the Južnoslovenská region, the warm south of the country, where the protected-origin rules allow vines on south-facing slopes and on the plain alike. Matyšák works with growers there as well as in its home Small Carpathians.
Neskorý zber means late harvest, and in Slovakia it is a matter of ripeness, not of sweetness. The rules for the region ask for fully ripe grapes with at least 21 °NM at picking, that is 21 kilograms of sugar in every hundred litres of must. The must may not be enriched with sugar, and sulphur dioxide is the only preservative allowed.
