Interesting. A very international-style Catarratto - I'd never have guessed the variety blind, let alone Sicily. But once I knew, things made sense. Good acidity, a long finish, voluminous with the lees coming through nicely. There's a touch of grass and meadow alongside the citrus - not the wild, salty, briny Catarratto you sometimes find from southwestern Sicily, but a polished, friendly version of it. Not my style, but well-made and tasty. Drinks easy.
A monovarietal from Donnafugata. 100% Lucido (synonym of Catarratto), grown in southwestern Sicily on the Estate of Contessa Entellina. Hilly terrain at 200-400m above sea level, clay loam soils, mild winters and dry breezy summers with strong diurnal temperature variations. VSP training with Guyot pruning.
The 2024 growing season was characterised by low rainfall and higher average temperatures - harvest began a few days early, with below-average quantity but quality on target. Gentle pressing, fermentation in steel at controlled temperature, two months of tank ageing followed by three months in bottle before release.
13% alcohol, 5.8 g/l acidity, pH 3.20. Best within three years. The name "prio" means joy and happiness in Sicilian dialect. First vintage: 2014.
