Château d'Yquem is the only Premier Cru Supérieur of the 1855 classification, a rank created for it alone and never given to another Sauternes. The wine is Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc, picked over successive passes through the vineyard as botrytis takes the berries one by one, and this 1998 finished at 13.5% with residual sugar around 134 g/L.
It is a Lur-Saluces bottle, and among the last of them. Alexandre de Lur Saluces had run Yquem since 1968, when his uncle Bertrand died; in 1999 Bernard Arnault reached agreement with him and his son Bertrand for their shares, lifting LVMH to a reported 64.2% of the estate, and he left in 2004 after differences with the new owner. He was running Château de Fargues a few kilometres away at the same time, which is why bottles of this era from the two estates carry the same family name. Fargues stayed with the family and became his sole concern afterwards.
