Killing acidity, the grape coming through clean and direct - lemon-chalky, mineral, sharp. Super fresh and properly delicious. Not the most complex bottle of the night, but exactly what the welcome slot asks for: a palate-resetter with electric drive.
Volcanic-basalt Durella from Corte Moschina, a 35 ha family estate in Roncà - the northeastern corner of Soave at the foot of the Lessini mountains. PuroCaso is the ancestral-method member of their sparkling lineup: bottle-fermented in spring after harvest, sealed under crown cap, undisgorged. ~3 months on lees in bottle before release. Light yeast sediment - the producer recommends a quick turn of the bottle before opening to rouse the lees.
100% Durella, labelled IGT Veneto rather than the local Lessini Durello DOC.
Durella itself is a thick-skinned, extremely high-acid white native to the Monti Lessini between Verona and Vicenza. The name traces to "duro" - hard, tough - referring to the skins; that built-in electric acidity is exactly why the grape has converged on sparkling as its modern vocation.
Estate began organic conversion in 2016. Run today by Maria Patrizia Niero with sons Alessandro (winemaker) and Giacomo (vineyard manager).
Oh, gorgeous lemony character, killer acidity. Lovely smokiness and minerality. Sharp, focused acidity. Not complex, but very tasty - sometimes that's all you need.
