The house presents Nathalie Haussmann as a distant descendant of Baron Haussmann, the prefect who rebuilt Paris for Napoleon III; Wine Folly calls him her great-great-grand-uncle. Before Paris, the house says, he served in the Gironde and married into a Bordeaux wine family. The couple later bought Château Rouillac.
In 2009, two hundred years after his birth, she launched a Bordeaux named for him, Haussmann Baron Eugène, and built a wine house around it. Haussmann Famille buys from growers on multi-year contracts, which the house says now cover about 2,215 hectares.
Most of that is in Bordeaux, but the range has spread to Pays d'Oc, Provence and the Rhône. The baron who redrew a city now lends his name to wines from four regions.
