Cherries, red plums, a flicker of redcurrant, faint earthy underbelly, dried rosemary-thyme herbs on the edges. The fruit register reads almost classically Pinot, but the structure runs harsher - tighter and shorter than Pinot tannin should be, and not Nebbiolo's longer-sweeter shape either. Closer to Garnacha territory in the end: warm-climate red, red fruits and herbs, grip without aristocracy. Pleasant to drink, fresh, lifted. Beykush's recent releases are coming out really well. A solid showing. Haha.
Beykush's Pinot Noir Reserve is the producer's serious red, made from three Pinot Noir clones planted across two parcels on the Beykush peninsula. Each clone is fermented separately in a mix of stainless steel and oak vessels, then aged twelve months in French oak barrels before blending and bottling. 12% ABV, dry. Production-dated 11 February 2025 on the back label.
Pinot Noir is one of the experimental plantings the estate has invested in seriously. Bessarabian conditions are not classical Pinot terrain - warm, distant from the cool nights of Burgundy - but the seaside influence and southern altitude moderate ripening enough that the variety has become one of Beykush's quiet wartime successes.
