Le Marne, 'the marls,' is Isolabella della Croce's Monferrato Rosso, named for the calcareous marl the vines root into at Loazzolo, up in the Alto Monferrato hills of Asti. A Piedmontese red led by Barbera, with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto filling it out and the proportions shifting vintage to vintage. Isolabella is a tiny estate better known for its Alta Langa spumante and Pinot Nero; this is the house's everyday table red, each variety vinified apart and then married. Monferrato DOC, 14%.
