Tasted blind and completely missed. High aromatic intensity - lifted red and wild berries (redcurrant, raspberry, blueberry), violets, and a distinct savoury streak of iron, chalk, and crushed rock. White pepper and spice rounding out the bouquet. Fresh and juicy entry, growing into a medium-to-full-bodied palate of tart cherry, orange peel, wild herbs, all tied together by bright acidity and silky integrated tannins. Long, elegant, crisp, lingering on fruit and salinity. Brilliant wine.
Dòlio is F. Algueira's field-blend from the oldest vines on the steepest Doade slopes - slate soils above the Sil. The estate publishes the blend as 66% Mencía, 20% Brancellao, 6% Sousón, 4% Caíño, 4% Garnacha Tintorera. 14% ABV. Bottled under the Summum tier of Ribeira Sacra DO - a quality classification (introduced in the 2018 Pliego reform) requiring at least 85% principal varieties: Mencía, Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón, Caíño Tinto. Summum sits above the standard DO tier and runs on a separate axis from the aging-based Vino de Garda / Vino de Garda Histórico classifications. 2020 in Ribeira Sacra: humid spring then long dry summer, small concentrated berries, lower yields, reds with crisp fruit and elevated alcohols balanced by acidity.
