Adega Algueira was founded by Fernando González Riveiro in Doade, in the Amandi sub-zone of Ribeira Sacra. His first vineyard - Viña de Carballo Cobo - went into the ground in 1979 on overgrown family land; the bonded winery and the Algueira brand came in 1998 (two years after Ribeira Sacra DO itself was established in 1996). Today his son Fabio González leads the winemaking - second generation.
Around 30 hectares spread across three Ribeira Sacra sub-zones, primarily Amandi (Doade) with extensions in Ribeiras do Sil (Abeleda) and Quiroga-Bibei (Montefurado). Algueira is a founding member of Futuro Viñador, the Galician indigenous-grape growers' group, and an early advocate for both indigenous-variety reds (Brancellao, Sousón, Caíño, Merenzao) and for alternative ageing vessels (steel, oak, foudres, clay eggs).
