Manchuela estate at Ledaña founded in 1998 by the wine journalist Víctor de la Serna: organic Syrah, Bobal and other varieties at 700 to 1,000 m, run since 2019 by a new team with Javier Revert making the wines.
Víctor de la Serna was a journalist to his core: a co-founder of El Mundo in 1989 and the creator of its wine site, elmundovino. In 1998 he started Finca Sandoval from scratch at Ledaña, in the heart of the Manchuela; its first Syrah went into a plot that belonged to his wife Carmen, whose surname is Sandoval. He died in Madrid in October 2024, aged 77.
He planted Syrah, from cuttings of Château de Beaucastel by one importer's account, and Touriga Nacional, and worked with grapes from old vineyards of native varieties around him. The estate farms about 26 hectares organically, on limestone-dominated soils at roughly 700 to 1,000 m, and it was a founding member of Grandes Pagos de España.
In 2019 a group of friends led by Ángel and Germán García-Cordero took over, though accounts differ on how much of the estate de la Serna kept, and Javier Revert has made the wines since that vintage. The new team has planted Bobal and bought old vineyards, some of them ungrafted Bobal from the 1930s and 1940s. The range runs from Salia, the village wine, up to La Rosa, a single-vineyard, mostly Bobal wine from a plot planted in 1939.
