Grattamacco is one of the oldest estates in Bolgheri, founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, with its first vintage in 1982. Since 2002 it has belonged to Claudio Tipa's ColleMassari group, which kept the estate on its course. It sits high on the Bolgheri hill, among woods at around 100 metres, where the winds keep the vines healthy - part of why Meletti Cavallari moved it to organic farming back in the 1990s, a certification (ICEA) it still carries.
The estate made its name with reds - it bottled one of Bolgheri's first Rosso wines in 1994 - built around Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. The Vermentino is its single white.
