Haro's Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, founded 1879 and still family-controlled; Cune, Imperial, Viña Real, Contino and Monopole, the oldest white-wine brand in Spain.
Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, CVNE, was founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa at Haro's Barrio de la Estación, where its Cune winery still stands, and the house says it remains controlled by the founders' direct descendants. The Haro cellars include a hall built between 1890 and 1909 with a column-free steel roof truss that the house credits to Gustave Eiffel or his studio. CVNE's brands run across Rioja and beyond: Cune, Imperial and Monopole from Haro, Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino in Rioja Alavesa, Bela in Ribera del Duero, Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras, La Val in Rías Baixas, Roger Goulart for Cava, and Asúa. Monopole, registered in 1915, is the oldest white-wine brand name in Spain; the modern Monopole is a young Viura from Rioja Alta fruit fermented in steel, while Monopole Clásico, revived in 2014 with Ezequiel García, the house's winemaker from the 1940s to the 1970s, restores the barrel-aged, flor-touched style of the 1960s. In 2023 its Real de Asúa Carromaza entered La Place de Bordeaux, and in 2024 CVNE became the first Rioja winery to reach IWCA Gold Member status for carbon reduction.
