Hazelnut and jerez-leaning oxidative tones, with red apple sitting at the core and a faint mushroom shading on the perimeter. Good acidity, long finish, real intensity for a single-village 1er Cru Pinot. The barrel-fermented base reads cleanly through the lees ageing - structured, complete, properly serious. Tasty.
Montchenot is Nicolas Maillart's lieu-dit Pinot Noir from Villers-Allerand - one of three single-parcel Pinot Noirs the estate makes from this north-facing 1er Cru on the Montagne de Reims. 100% Pinot Noir, vintage 2019, vinified entirely in oak barrels with extended ageing on fine lees, no fining or filtration. Disgorged June 2023. Dosage one gram per litre - extra brut. 12.5% ABV. Lot L373832.
The Villers-Allerand single-parcel Pinots are the focused-Pinot end of the Maillart range - barrel-fermented base wine, low dosage, the cellar work treating each parcel as a Burgundian climat rather than a reserve component for blending.
