Quite a powerful Brunello in the American-leaning register - I lean more toward Stella di Campalto and Podere Salicutti when it comes to Montalcino, but even outside my register this one lands. Cassis and cassis jelly leading the aromatic register, with spices, leather, and earth threading underneath. Dry on the palate with a harsh tannin, but the wine unfolds in the glass with time and turns into something pretty - powerful, but pretty. Just a bit young.
This is the estate Brunello, sourced from Sangiovese plantings around the Pian di Conte podere in the warmer southern reaches of Montalcino near Sant'Angelo in Colle. Vinification runs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, after which the wine spends roughly two to two and a half years split between large Slavonian botti (the majority share) and 500-litre French tonneaux, followed by extended bottle ageing before release. 2020 in Montalcino was a sunny, even-ripening vintage with hot dry stretches tempered by cool nights, giving Brunellos with a friendlier, more openly fruited profile than the structured 2019s, succulent tannins and earlier-drinking appeal without sacrificing balance. From a producer with a long traditional pedigree, the 2020 lands as approachable Sangiovese rather than a wine demanding cellar time.
