Montigny-lès-Arsures, Arbois. Guillaume d'Angerville (of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, Volnay) and François Duvivier, founded 2012. ~15 hectares assembled in part from retiring Jacques Puffeney. Biodynamic, Burgundian precision applied to Jura; strong ouillé emphasis.
Guillaume d'Angerville, owner of Le Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay, set up Domaine du Pélican in 2012 together with François Duvivier, who had joined Marquis d'Angerville as régisseur in 2005 and now runs the Jura estate day-to-day. The name comes from the pelican on Arbois's town crest.
The origin story is a blind-tasting moment: a Tissot Arbois Chardonnay, Les Bruyères 2005, at a Paris restaurant.
I tasted this bottle blind in a restaurant in Paris that I often go to. I always tell the sommelier to give me something blind and the only rule is that it has to be outside Burgundy. When he brought me this wine, I said, "You forgot the rule, you brought me a wine from Burgundy." And he said, "I am afraid you're wrong." -- Guillaume d'Angerville
The estate is headquartered at Clos Saint-Laurent in Montigny-lès-Arsures and runs to around 15 hectares, all within a 2-kilometre radius. It was assembled in stages: the ~5-hectare Château de Chavanes parcel in 2012; the ~5-hectare Grand Curoulet purchased the same year from Jean-Marc Brignot; a further ~4-hectare acquisition from the retiring Jacques Puffeney in December 2014; and the Béranger parcel added in 2017 (first vintage 2018). Key lieux-dits: Grand Curoulet, En Barbi, Clos Saint-Laurent, Béranger.
Organic and biodynamic from acquisition, with biodynamic certification somewhere around 2015-2017 (sources diverge). The five classic Arbois varieties: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau, Pinot Noir.
The range is built around ouillé whites rather than sous voile or vin jaune - that is the domaine's Burgundian fingerprint. Arbois Chardonnay plus single-parcel En Barbi and Grand Curoulet; Savagnin Ouillé as the topped-up flagship, alongside a Grand Curoulet Savagnin Ouillé and a skin-contact Savagnin Macération Pelliculaire. Reds include Trois Cépages (Poulsard / Trousseau / Pinot Noir), Béranger Trousseau, plus varietal Poulsard and Pinot Noir. A sparkling Brut S° rounds things out. The domaine is widely credited with raising Arbois's profile for Burgundy-trained palates.
